The following are Student Memorial Scholarships administered by the department of Student Engagement and Leadership.
Scholarships are offered by several academic and administrative units on campus and this is not an exhaustive list of memorial scholarships.
Applications will open on April 1, 2025 and close on April 20, 2025 at 11:45pm.

George Chen Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Compassionate Service
George Chen was a beloved member of the UC Santa Barbara community. A dedicated student, George entered UC Santa Barbara as a freshman in the fall of 2012 after attending Leland High School in San Jose, CA. He was a Computer Science major in the College of Engineering.
George’s life was prematurely and tragically cut short on May 23, 2014, as a junior at UCSB. The George Chen Memorial Scholarship for Outstanding Compassionate Service Fund was established to honor his life and to memorialize his lasting contributions to the UCSB community. The scholarship will allow George’s spirit to live on through future Gauchos who exhibit his compassion, dedication, and kindness.

David D. Propp Memorial Scholarship
David D. Propp was a well-loved and well-respected student at UC Santa Barbara. His life was tragically cut short on November 9, 2012. David was a fourth year student and had recently changed majors from Physics to Biological Sciences. He was incredibly involved on the campus, working at the Recreation Center, singing in an all-male a cappella group, and participating in musical theater. He was also active in campus ministry. His optimism, faith, and positive attitude helped to guide his actions and made him a popular member of the campus community.
To honor David’s life, his family established the David D. Propp Memorial Scholarship Fund in an effort to memorialize his contributions to the UC Santa Barbara campus and assist future UCSB students who, like David, are guided by their faith.

David Wang Memorial Scholarship
David Wang was a beloved member of the UC Santa Barbara community. A dedicated student, David entered UC Santa Barbara as a freshman in the summer of 2012 after attending Fremont Christian High School. He was a Computer Engineering major in the College of Engineering.
David’s life was prematurely and tragically cut short on May 23, 2014, as a junior at UCSB. The David Wang Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor his life and to memorialize his lasting contributions to the UCSB community. The scholarship will allow David’s spirit to live on through future Gauchos who exhibit his compassion, dedication, and kindness.

Veronika Weiss Memorial Scholarship
Veronika Weiss was a beloved member of the UC Santa Barbara community. A dedicated student, Veronika entered UC Santa Barbara in the fall of 2013 after attending Westlake High School. She was a pre-Financial Mathematics and Statistics major. While attending UCSB, Veronika joined the Tri Delta Sorority and was a cherished friend to many.
Veronika’s life was prematurely and tragically cut short on May 23, 2014. The Veronika Weiss Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor her life and to memorialize her lasting contributions to the UCSB community. The scholarship will allow Veronika’s spirit to live on through future Gauchos who exhibit her compassion, positive attitude, and joy of life.

Gay Dowling Young ’67 Memorial Scholarship
Gay Dowling Young received her BA in Sociology from UCSB in 1967, as well as her teaching credential. She participated in and was a member of Associated Students and was the recipient of the Honor Copy, the highest Associated Students award, and chosen as Panhellenic Woman of the Year. Gay was a lifelong member of the Chi Omega Sorority and maintained a close bond with her sorority sisters for 58 years.
The Gay Dowling Young ’67 Memorial Scholarship will annually support an upper division undergraduate student who has shown outstanding leadership, service and scholarship, with a preference for individuals involved in sorority life or Associated Students.
